This is the car that Vauxhall claims will raise the bar for company car drivers with improved quality, more space, better drive and more equipment as standard.
The addition of more economical (and more powerful) engines should also bring good news for company car drivers looking to cut costs. There's a new 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 140bhp and average fuel economy of 48mpg. With emissions of 139g/km it attracts annual BIK tax from £538 for standard rate tax payers for 2009/10. The equivalent model in the current Astra line-up - the 140bhp 1.8 VVT Life (air-con) has an annual bill of £713.
Those looking to cut costs to the bone can opt for the 1.3-litre CDTi ecoFLEX model, available from Spring 2010. It's not the cleanest hatchback of this size (the Golf Bluemotion and the 2010 Ford Focus Econetic are both down to just 99 g/km CO2), but with emissions of 109 g/km, it does qualify for the lowest company car band for diesels at 13 per cent and £35 per year road tax.
The Astra will also be available with adaptive suspension called FlexRide, which can be altered between three different settings - standard, sport and tour - depending on the driving conditions. There will be a wide range of diesel and petrol engines available including a high performance VXR version which will follow later.
The Astra is available to order now with the first cars arriving in showrooms in December.
