Peugeot's new 5008 seven-seat people carrier will be priced from £16,895 on the road when it arrives in showrooms in January.

The 5008 is Peugeot's first purpose-built compact people carrier and shares major components with the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso.

It will be offered with a choice of 120bhp normally aspirated 1.6-litre and 156bhp turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engines, or a choice of 1.6-litre or 2.0-litre diesel engines with power ranging from 110bhp to 163bhp.

It will be available in three equipment grades - Active, Sport and Exclusive - with the latter two only available on the most powerful petrol and diesel versions.

All come with seven seats - the third row can be hidden below the floor, while the second row seats fold flat. Electronic stability control, electric parking brake with hill-start assist, energy-saving tyres and air conditioning are all standard.

Sport models come with 12-inch alloy wheels, aluminium trim detailing, cruise control, lighting pack with removable torch, storage pack (under seat and footwell storage), and front fog lights.

Exclusive models also include a panoramic glass roof, automatic headlamps and rain-sensing windscreen wipers, electic folding door mirrors and automatic dimming rear view mirror, head-up display, Bluetooth integration and electronic climate control.

The lowest CO2 version is the 1.6 HDi Active with EGC sequential manual gearbox, which produces 135g/km, although all other manual diesel versions have CO2 emissions below 160g/km.
