SEAT will launch a new version of its Alhambra people carrier later this year, offering sliding side doors for the first time and a new fold-flat rear seating system.

Due to go on sale in the UK in the autumn, the Alhambra remains a seven-seater, but now the rear seats can be folded into the floor to create more luggage space. Previously, the seats would have to be removed.

Adding to the practicality are sliding side doors to make getting in and out easier, and the option of a self-parking system that will manoeuvre the Alhambra into a parallel parking space automatically.

Under the bonnet is a choice of a 1.4 TSI petrol engine delivering 150bhp, or a pair of 2.0 TDI diesels with either 140 or 170bhp. All three come with start-stop technology and brake energy recuperation as standard to boost fuel economy and lower emissions.

SEAT claims CO2 emissions of 143g/km for the 2.0 TDI 140 version, putting it into the 20% benefit-in-kind tax band.

Prices will be announced closer to the car's launch, but expect to pay from £21,000.
