A three-cylinder petrol engine promising diesel-like fuel economy has been added to the Audi A1 range.

The 1.0TFSI engine with a manual gearbox has a claimed economy of 67.3mpg and emits just 97g/km of CO2. This puts it in BIK band 14 next year, and should mean a monthly bill of £33 for a 20 percent tax payer based on the starting p11d price of £14,260.

Its turbocharged engine produces 94bhp and replaces the 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine available at launch. Despite its diminutive size it can go from 0-62mpg in 10.9 seconds, with either a five-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Choose the S Tronic dual clutch auto box and the efficiency takes a slight hit, with claimed economy of 64.2mpg and CO2 figures of 102g/km.

Even with an auto box, those are diesel-troubling figures. Audi says it has boosted the efficiency of its 1.6-litre TDI from 74.3mpg to 80.7mpg, and reduced CO2 emission from 99g/km to 92g/km.

Audi A1 available in SE or Sport spec

The A1 comes with alloy wheels, remote central locking, air conditioning, electric front windows and mirrors and a six-speaker CD audio system with iPod connection and 6.5-inch retractable display.

Standard safety kit includes a secondary collision brake assist system, which applies the brakes to reduce the risks of skidding during an accident.

Sport trim comes with the Audi Music Interface, larger 16-inch wheels, sports suspension, sports seats, Bluetooth mobile phone preparation and a Driver’s Information System.
