A new plug-in hybrid version of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class saloon will go on sale next summer, promising all the comforts of the standard model, with low CO2 emissions of 48g/km meaning only a 7 percent BIK tax band for the 2016/17 tax year.

For the first time Mercedes-Benz is also producing an estate-sized plug-in hybrid, which offers up to 1,370-litres of boot space and CO2 emissions of 49g/km.

Also available as an estate

Combining a four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor, the C350 has a total output of 275bhp and 600Nm of torque enabling the car to accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds, the estate is marginally slower at 6.2 seconds.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the car will be able to travel 19 miles on electric power alone and motorists can expect fuel consumption of 134.5mpg.

C350 has four hybrid driving modes

The lithium-ion battery can be recharged in one hour 45 minutes at a public charging point or about two hours from a domestic socket.

As well as hybrid mode, which uses the petrol engine and the electric motor, drivers can select between all-electric mode, E-save mode which saves the battery charge, and Charge mode which charges the battery using the combustion engine.

Drivers will also be able to select specific driving modes including Sport, Sport plus, Comfort, Individual and Economy which alter transmission, suspension and damping settings to suit.

Inside the C350

The C350 is supplied in sporty Avantgarde trim but can be swapped for a more classic Exclusive model at no extra cost.

A comfortable Airmatic air suspension is offered as standard as well as Pre-Entry Climate Control which allows the driver to set the desired temperature for the car remotely before setting off.

The Merdedes-Benz C350 will be available in summer 2016, more details about pricing will be released closer to the time.
