Safety

5 out of 5 5.0

Virtually all models get six airbags (the base model Studio has to make do without curtain airbags) while the Focus scored a maximum five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests for front and side impact. Optional safety equipment includes adaptive headlights and a traction and stability control system called ESP. Originally a £250 option this was made standard on facelifted models from 2008.

Anti-theft measures should be pretty good with all models getting an immobiliser and an alarm is fitted on higher spec models.

Euro NCAP Rating

The Ford Focus Estate (05-11) was tested by Euro NCAP in and received the following safety ratings:

  • Adult Occupant - 5 stars
  • Child Occupant - 4 stars
  • Pedestrian - 2 stars

Euro NCAP provides motoring consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe. The safety ratings are determined from a series of vehicle tests, designed and carried out by Euro NCAP. These tests represent, in a simplified way, important real life accident scenarios that could result in injured or killed car occupants or other road users.

Interior & boot space

4.5 out of 5 4.5

The boxy rear end of the Focus estate won't win many style awards, but what it does mean is plenty of boot space and a large, square load area. With the rear seats in place there's 482 litres of space - that's almost 100 litres more than the hatchback. Folding the rear seats down could be easier though - there are no clever fold flat mechanisms here - instead you have to flip up the seat base and fold down the backs if you want something resembling a flat floor.

Even then it isn't totally flat and the flipped up bases eat into the overall boot length. However the boot floor is wide and the large tailgate opening means you can easily transport bulky or boxy items. Up front there are numerous little storage areas including a front armrest with a storage compartment underneath.

How does the boot space compare?

Check the table below to see how the Ford Focus Estate (05-11) compares to other similar cars in terms of available boot space.

Model Boot space
Peugeot 308 SW (08-14) 573 litres
Renault Megane Sport Tourer (09-16) 486 litres
Ford Focus Estate (05-11) 482 litres
Vauxhall Astra Estate (04-10) 350 litres
