The Hyundai i40 has lots space both in inside the cabin and in the boot. Even with six-footers in the front seats there is ample room for two rear adult passengers.

Boot space is very impressive although the hinges on the aperture may hinder the loading of awkward items. With the seats in place the i40 has a loadspace of 525 litres – that’s more than enough space for at least two sets of golf clubs and a couple of soft bags – but the VW Passat saloon still trumps the Hyundai in this area.

The VW Passat has 565 litres of load space – that’s 40 litres more than the i40. Even though that aperture may be troublesome you’ll not have to lift your loads too high because the i40 has the lowest boot floor level in the segment – 592mm above ground and 43mm lower than a VW Passat. The glovebox and centre storage are both of an adequate size and there are plenty of smaller storage spaces for loose change and nik-naks.

The only real negative point is that the cup holders are directly behind the gearbox and can get a little annoying when driving the manual car as you keep bashing your hand and arm on anything sitting in there. Spillages may be a regular occurrence if you’re not careful.

Safety

Hyundai i40 safety is pretty imperious. It attained the maximum five-star rating when tested by Euro NCAP and safety features including stability control, hill assist, emergency stop signal, ABS and seven airbags.
