The Sonata is well equipped but it isn’t great value compared to other budget saloons. Running costs are reasonable however, helped by affordable Hyundai servicing and the five year warranty which covers any unexpected costs for a large chunk of the cars life. Insurance is group 10 for the 2.0-litre petrol and CRTD models and group 15 for the V6, but fuel economy could be better for all three engines.

The Sonata scores reasonably on the eco front. With an average of 199 g/km CO2 across the model line-up, its emissions are fairly standard for a saloon. Economy isn’t overly impressive though – the diesel manages 46mpg but the 2.0-litre petrol only returns 35mpg.

Hyundais are usually very reliable and the manufacturer has a great deal of confidence in its cars with an unrivalled warranty package.
