The Infiniti Q50 achieved a full five stars during its round of EuroNCAP testing and comes with the firm’s Safety Shield technology. The newest arm of this is predictive Forward Collision Warning which not only monitors the speed and distance of the car directly in front, but the one in front of that too. We did experience a degree of hyperactivity with the system, though better safe than sorry.

There’s Active Lane Control (ALC) available with the Direct Adaptive Steering which unusually uses the steering rather than individually applied brakes to keep the car between the white lines on the motorway.

On top of that there’s Active Trace Control which does brake individual wheels when cornering to trim the car’s line through a bend while High Beam Assistant ensures you never dazzle on-coming traffic.

Choose the diesel if you want to maximise Infiniti Q50 practicality, as while it has a sizable 500-litre boot the Hybrid makes do with a space some 100 litres smaller. With the battery packs placed behind the rear seats the length is compromised too, and larger suitcases may prove problematic.

To be fair even the diesel’s luggage space isn’t perfectly shaped with some sizable wheelarch intrusions. At least the standard 60/40 split backrest means you can expand this and accommodate larger loads on the occasion that you need to – a function not available on the Hybrid model.
