Range Rover Sport boot space, practicality and safety

2022 onwards (change model)
Practicality rating: 4.1 out of 54.1

  • Plenty of room in the front
  • Less boot space than its rivals
  • Well-sized interior storage areas

How much space is there?

The Sport isn’t much smaller than the full-sized Range Rover, and in fact the wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear axles) is identical between the two cars. This means that, for the first time, the Range Rover Sport actually offers good space for passengers in the rear as well as the front – in pretty sumptuous surroundings.

Up front, you get generous amounts of leg and headroom to complement its commanding driving position, and although you don’t quite as much headroom as a full-sized Range Rover, there’s very little in it. As for seat adjustment, there’s loads of it, with the electrical adjusters located conveniently on the door panels.

Space for passengers in the rear is equally good. It’s not as spacious as something like a BMW X7, but it’s similar to the short-wheelbase models of the full-sized Range Rover which means ample room for four six-footers to spread out. It’s a wide car, too, so don’t panic if said six-footers are burly rugby players.

Boot space and storage

The boot is well sized, and the tailgate is electrically operated as standard, but far from being the largest available. With the rear seats up, you get 647 litres of boot space which grows to 1,491 litres with them folded. This compares with up to 1,870 litres for the BMW X5 and 2,055 for the Mercedes-Benz GLE.

You can drop the load height by lowering the air suspension via buttons conveniently in the boot. Usefully, the plug-in model’s boot space is identical to the mild-hybrid powered versions.

There are two cupholders on the centre console, and can be covered by a sliding lid. The smaller of the two central cubbyholes divides in a way that allows you to stow your phone safely away alongside its charger port, so you won’t have it cluttering up your interior and distracting you. The glovebox is also split in two and generously sized – but it’s electrically operated so you can only open it with the ignition on.

Is it easy to park?

The Range Rover Sport is large, at more than five metres in length and 2.2m wide. However, thanks to its high driving position and impressive forward visibility, driving in the city and on narrow streets pose no problems. The car’s four-wheel steering system is brilliant – it turns the rear wheels the opposite way to the fronts at low speeds and reduces the amount of space it takes to turn the car around in tight spaces and fits you into parking bays you’d ordinarily not consider.

Rear visibility is typically SUV-poor, but front and rear parking sensors, a plethora of cameras, and an excellent 360-degree parking system take the stress out of parking in tight spots. Land Rover’s automatic parking technology is available, which allows the vehicle to scan for a space and theoretically park itself with minimal input from the driver. It’s a bit slow to use, so you’ll need patience from any drivers waiting behind you.

Safety

  • Five-star Euro NCAP rating
  • Loaded with safety kit
  • Assisted driving tech operates as it should

The Range Rover Sport received a five-star rating when tested by Euro NCAP in 2022 and it scored particularly well for its adult protection and safety assist systems. Safety equipment is generous, and it’s in line with all recent Range Rovers, which have also scored the full five-star rating.

Standard safety equipment includes the usual autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist and a vast array of sensors, while very effective Matrix LED headlights and one of the better adaptive cruise control systems available today take the sting out of long drives at day or at night.
