Range Rover boot space, practicality and safety
- Plenty of room for passengers
- Impressive boot space
- Average storage space up front
How much space is there?
Even in standard wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear axle line) guise, the Range Rover is a big car. Rear legroom is good if not extravagant, and there’s a huge amount of headroom. Four passengers travel in sumptuous comfort – and there’s more than enough space on the rear bench for a fifth, even if they aren’t going to be as comfortable as the outer pair.
Shoulder-room in the rear is generous, with enough width for an average-sized adult in the middle seat to get comfortable. The view from the back seats is good thanks to deep and wide windows – all in all, this is a great car to spend time in.
There are myriad seating options, too. The standard car seats five. Go long wheelbase and you’ve the choice of two rows, or three rows, seating seven. Long wheelbase models certainly give those in the second row appreciably more rear legroom, although you’ll have to sacrifice some of that to get an adult comfortably in the third row.
Boot space and storage
There’s no question about it – the Range Rover’s luggage space is more than enough for most people, posessing 725 litres with the rear seats in place. Impressively, plug-in hybrids get the same amount of space as those with petrol and diesel engines. You lose 100-200-litres of space in most rivals. Even with the third row in use on seven-seat versions, there’s room for a fair haul of shopping bags.
The famed split tailgate is all present and correct, and it’s electrically assisted as standard. That lower section of the split tailgate doubles as a seating area when parked, and there are some strategically placed cupholders to nail home that fact. There’s a false floor with an impressive amount of space beneath it, too. In fact, our only real criticism would be that shorter people will need to climb in the boot to get luggage out from the leading edge of the loadbay.
Is it easy to park?
The Range Rover is massive, at more than five metres in length and 2.2m wide. However, thanks to its commanding driving position and good forward visibility, it doesn’t feel too intimidating to drive. This is helped a lot by the car’s four-wheel steering system which, at low speeds, turns the rear wheels the opposite way to the fronts. This seriously reduces the amount of space it takes to turn the car around and allows the Range Rover to fit into gaps you’d ordinarily not consider.
Rear visibility is more of an issue because of the narrow rear window and wide pillars, but front and rear parking sensors, a plethora of cameras and a digital rear view mirror that displays a view from a roof-mounted camera (meaning if you have passengers on the rear seat, the view remains unimpeded) also make light work of parking in tight spots. Land Rover’s automatic parking technology is available, which allows the vehicle to scan for a space and theoretically park itself with minimal input from the driver.

Safety
- Five-star Euro NCAP rating
- Loaded with safety kit
- Assisted driving tech operates as it should
The Range Rover scored the full five-star rating when it was tested by Euro NCAP in 2022. Standard features include Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), blind spot monitoring, active lane-keeping assist, a Rear Traffic Monitor and Traffic Sign Recognition – all to help you keep it on the island and avoid trouble when you’re driving.
Matrix LED headlights come fitted as standard and respond well to oncoming traffic, dimming sections in a slick manner to avoid dazzling other motorists. Adaptive cruise control and speed limiter also come as standard.
The Range Rover’s safety equipment seems particularly well-calibrated, not always a given even in 2023. The lane-keeping aids, when enabled, rarely give cause for concern, and the adaptive cruise control isn’t so skittish that you have to pull out long before you want to overtake somebody on the motorway. It makes the driving experience all the more relaxing.
