What are the running costs?

The 6 comes with no hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric powertrains to tempt people after low CO2 emissions.

However, Mazda has set the car up to give good real-world mpg. This means that while the claimed economy figures aren’t as high as with some rivals, you should be able to get closer to these figures than rivals with more ambitious numbers.

Most economical on paper is the 145hp with the manual gearbox. Officially it’ll do 42.2mpg or 40.4mpg with the automatic gearbox. The larger petrol engine isn’t far behind, however, even with the most powerful 194hp version it will still return 38.2mpg officially.

When it comes to CO2 emissions, the Mazda 6 doesn’t stand out above the rest, but should be more representative than with many other models, according to the manufacturer.

The 2.0-litre 145hp petrol ranges from 152-159g/km, depending on which gearbox is fitted, with the 2.5-litre rising up to 167g/km.

Servicing and warranty

Thankfully it won’t cost you an arm and a leg to get your Mazda maintained because the dealerships offer low servicing costs.

Mazda’s warranty lasts for 3 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. This is pretty standard for the industry, but lags behind BMW’s 3-year/unlimited mileage warranty.

Reliability

  • Only a couple of recalls issued
  • Mostly minor faults reported
  • Few reasons for concern

Mazda has issued a few recalls for this generation of 6, with two relating to engine valves, and one to the fuel pump, but there should be few safety issues to worry about.

Unfortunately, reliability has been a bit of a mixed bag for the 6 Saloon in this generation in our owners’ reviews. There have been reports of electrical gremlins Mazda has been unable to fix, along with reported issues with engine and exhaust components.

We ran a Mazda 6 Tourer for a year and 18,000 miles and had very few reliability faults to report.
