Miles per pound (mpp)

What is miles per pound?

Fuel economy

A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test. Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 19 - 29 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

With a list prices close to – and exceeding – the £100,000 barrier and a limited market for top-end coupes, depreciation will be severe in terms of cash lost. The fuel consumption for the V8 and V12 engines is, unsurprisingly high, though not out of the ordinary for these types of engines. Mercedes-Benz servicing has a premium price and CL is understandably expensive to insure.

With average fuel consumption figures of just 20mpg and emitting 328g/km CO2, it’s no surprise that CL scores lowly on the eco front. Nonetheless, these figures are fairly standard for an executive coupé and it performs similarly to the Porsche 911. The only saving grace is that buyers of these sorts of cars tend to do fewer miles per year than those that own average family cars.

Although Mercedes-Benz models lower down the range have suffered from declining standards in recent years, those near the top remain as expertly screwed together as they always have been. This model should continue the old model’s impeccable reliability record.
