Overview

The AMG versions of the SL – or at least the ones with V8 power – don’t seem to offer a great deal more on paper than the top versions in the standard range. The SL55 AMG and later SL63 AMG are on a par for power with the SL600 and offer considerably less pulling power. But the performance figures are only part of the attraction. Aggressive styling, a purposeful engine note and more responsive behaviour make it feel every inch the luxury sportscar.

The V12 SL65 AMG feels as fast as a missile, but has more of an emphasis on luxury than the V8 AMGs – as it should do for £150,000-plus.
