Servicing at Mercedes dealers is renowned for being expensive, but as the Viano is based on a van, it’s generally cheaper than most of the firms passenger car models. Insurance is reasonable at group 13 for the 2.0-litre CDI and 14 for the 2.2-litre CDI but fuel economy is only 33mpg at best and a woeful 24mpg on the 3.5-litre. According to Mercedes there are no differences in economy or emissions between standard, long and extra-long models.

The Viano performs pretty poorly on the eco front, not helped by a heavy kerb weight and boxy shape. The 2.0-litre CDI is reasonable though and emits 215g/km of CO2 while returning 33mpg. That’s quite good for a people carrier this size.

The Viano benefits from Mercedes-Benz vans’ reputation for mechanical strength. This means it is mechanically sound but the interior trim is cheap in places and is flimsier than Mercedes cars. There have also been quite a few recalls – not what you’d expect from Mercedes-Benz.
