Lacks power on hills otherwise OK

Have you had any problems with the car?
Clutch problems after 17,000 miles. tyres starting to crumble after same otherwise none. I got the feeling Mitsubishi are aware that the clutch is problematic. Mechanics told me I need a new clutch without investigating.
