I don't know what you are all complaining about do you think the tax is about global warming ? Are we so dumb to think that the taxes we pay are for any other reason than the millitary abroad ??? This country used to be world leaders in tech stuff and you think there's no solution ,i'll give you three now.

1) biofuels

2)( and this is a biggy) hydrofuels

3) electricfuel

So why have the government not invested in these technologies in the last TEN years, Global economics and N W O

The climate is changing. But 30,000 scientists have signed a petition saying that there is no proof that mankind is contributing to climate change. And Britain only produces 2% of the world's CO2 emissions. So what does Brown do with extra tax? He spends it on 1m more civil servants who generate hot air, loads of paper, travel to and from work and create more CO2. He is the most cynical person on the planet. This tax is not about CO2, but about wanting to spend our money "better" than we can.

I drive a Shogun 3.2 which is detrimental to my activities as a Farmer . My farms are five miles apart so instead of using my jeep Im going to have to use my tractor to move livestock which will certainly create much higher emmissions! Why doesnt the government allow people that can prove a need for these type of vehicles have some concession on road tax and penalise those people that simply use them to drop the kids off at school. My jeep is a necessity not a fashion statement!!

I OWN A CITROEN PICASSO 2001 DIESEL LX
I GET 58.8 MPG DRIVING CAREFULLY
I BOUGHT IT SECONDHAND A YEAR AGO WITH
95.000 MILES ON THE CLOCK,
BEST CAR I'VE EVER HAD
SO I'M REALLY HAPPY AS MY ROAD TAX FOR
2010 WILL BE £125 A YEAR
SO EVERYBODY SHOULD HAVE ONE, AND BAN 4X4
AS THEY TAKE UP MORE ROAD SPACE THEN ANY OTHER CAR AND MOST OF THEIR DRIVERS WOULD NOT COPE WITH OUT THE POWER-STEERING, AND CHARGING THEM MORE TAX WILL ONLY MAKE THE DRIVERS BIGGER BULLIES THEN THEY ALREADY ARE.....

I own a Volvo C70 2.0t as a second car which gets used for days out and holidays. I don't do any more than 6000 miles per annum and under the new tax laws will be paying £400 a year in tax. I think this is disgraceful to be placed in the same band as larger engined vehicles that do high mileages. I shall not be paying this as I intend to sell the volvo and buy a larger engined older car and produce more emmisions for less tax!!

I own a S2000 as a second car and do less than 500 miles per year, mainly trips to school and local work for the missus. The hike in tax from £160 to £700 by 2010 is yet another example of the sad state of our decision makers. Put it on the petrol, those that use ir payfor it. Ex s2000 owner this year.

I drive a rexton 4x4 and purchased it new on a 56 plate and at the time the tax was £210 a year. I have covered 8700 miles since new as the car is only used to tow my caravan. I believe that i have produced less emissions than a small car but paying over double a year now just for the car to sit on the drive most of the yar. The way i feel now is that i will use the car as much as possible since the rip-off road tax was announced, because i am not paying £400+ a year for it to sit there.

Fantastic article, very informative and to the point.
The government must reduce the tax on fuel.

IN THE BIGGER PICTURE BETWEEN ROAD TAX AND FUEL PRICE INCREASES PEOPLE WILL JUMP TO SMALLER MORE ECONOMICAL VEHICLES USUALLY TAKING A LOSS ON THEIR CURRENT VEHICLE IF IT IS A HIGH IMMITER ALSO CAR FOURE COURTS WILL TAKE A HIT ASWELL AS MANUFACTURERS IN THE UK POSSIBLE JOB LOSSES ECT LOW CO2 MEANS LESS REVENUE FOR THE GOVERMENT IF WE ALL BUY A FOCUS 1.6 DPF DIESEL TOMMOROW ALL THE GOVERMENT GETS IS £30 A YEAR IN ROAD TAX AND LESS FUEL REVENUE AS THEY GET 62 MPG WHERE WILL THEY GO TO MAKE UP THIS

I want to save the Planet (Hooray) and I do all kinds of nice and responsible things (Yippee) BUT I own a Sept 01 vehicle and will now be 'penalised retrospectively' for my decision to purchase this SEVEN years ago (Boo).
I could have bought a smaller car and changed it for a new one every year since, helping to destroy the Planet in the process (Mmmmm). The Road Tax Band differential between my 2001 2Ltr estate and a V12 Aston Martin will be 40 quid

I have a Shogun that has been converted to run on LPG yet I get no concessions for low CO2 emissions. After spending out £1000.00 for conversion as I use it for towing a trailer onto fields with a marquee on. I feel that I was not encouraged to help the environment by this conversion.

It's all very well talking about exchanging or tading in to a lower CO2 vehicle.

The Dealers will have caught up in that they will now be reducing the trade in allowance on your higher emission car.

That's for starters. If you have savings how much interest will you lose a year. Or if you finance that will be costly.

In short work it out. You may well be better off keeping the higher CO2 car and paying the increased tax.

Think carefully.

I think it's a joke! You pay tax on your earnings. Then you buy a house, you pay tax. You pay monthly council tax while living there. You pay tax on your purchases. You pay tax on your petrol. You pay car tax.
When I can't afford to drive to work becuase fuel and road tax is too much, I'll loose my job, and the government can pay me to sit at home!
This country is a joke. If the UK was a company, I would have quit a long time ago.

I have a 2001 Honda Civic 1.4i s auto 5rd on the 1991-2001 shape. My road tax was £205 last year and now is £210 which i just renewed and due to go up next year to £260. I just seems so funny that the tax is the same as a big 4x4 car at the monent after all its just a 1.4 engine, when i bought the car 2 1/2 years ago it thought i was saving money by buying a smaller engine.
