The Patrol hasn’t been crash tested by Euro NCAP, but it does have size, weight and solidity on its side. Safety features include standard driver and passenger airbags on all but early basic 2.8-litre TD models. There’s also side bags on SE+ and Aventura models. All cars have ABS, front seatbelt pretensioners, an immobiliser and remote central locking while top SE+ models and newer Trek and Aventura get an alarm.

Though the third row of seats don’t fold flat (they fold upwards – see gallery), the rear of Patrol is very practical. All the seats split and fold and it’s capable of carrying some seriously large loads. It’s the perfect height off the ground to easily get large items out off – plus there’s a ledge to rest them on if they’re heavy. Instead of a tailgate, there’s a split door, which can hamper loading the car as both doors swing outwards.

Inside there are big door bins and a decent sized glovebox.
