What does this car say about you?

I drive a car? I don't waste my money? I drive a fairly economical car.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

It's a nice little car. My wife wants to learn to drive - she thinks it is too good for her as a first car.

Would you buy this car again and why?

As a single person, most probably, yes. Although they don't make my model any more. For me, the value of the car has been pretty sublime. Bought for 5.5k in 2007, so it has cost me less than £800 per year in effect (plus service/MOT/Tax/insurance of course). Its not caused me much issue really. Can't fault it really. My mechanic says this 2.0 HDi engine just carries on an on. It looks pretty stylish still, even with its age. As a married person with 2 young children, no, most definitely not. The boot is rather small - although we have been able to get a decent double buggy in there! If you play golf, you can fit your clubs in the boot, but have to take the woods out of the bag and angle them in on their own (or pop them on the back seat).

What are you likely to buy next?

As I have a family now, I'm looking at: Insignia 2.0 160bhp hatch back (waiting for good economy ecoFLEX start stop second hand model with low mileage - should be waiting a while for that!) - I REALLY like the insignia inside and out. I'm a bit scared that it is slightly too big, though. Ford Focus Estate - an OK car with a big enough boot for me. Volvo V50 Estate - to me, not a wow car, but practical/economical/ hopefully reliable. BMW 320D 2.0 163bhp EFFICIENTDYNAMICS - a bit of a stretch financially. But maybe I could afford one in a couple of years time!

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Didn't buy from a dealer

Did you buy this car new?

    No

    What price did you pay?

    £5,500

When did you buy the car?

    July 2007

Did you get a good deal and why?

It was an ex lease car, that I drove for 3 years as a company car. It had low mileage on the clock, was in good condition, and I knew it's history. I was happy with £5500 price tag.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

I had the car as a company car prior to buying it. The company was no longer offering me a company car as a benefit. The car had low mileage, and it was easy to just carry on with the same car, rather than go out and try and buy second hand and possibly get ripped off.

    What was the dealer like?

The lease company were easy to deal with. I was able to get a free valet and 2 new tyres before I purchased the car I believe (it was a while ago!).

  • Driving it

    What's it like to drive?

I like it. It is comfortable, and powerful enough for my needs. Steering is good I think.

    What's it like to park?

Like any car, you need to get used to the dimensions of it, to know where the front and the rear ends are. Size-wise it fits in shopping car park spaces with ease. I find parallel parking pretty straightforward.

Have you had any problems with the car?

It's a ten year old car, so yes. Although nothing major in my books. Its never broken down. The car has done 101700 miles now. The clutch was making a whining sound when it was being pressed. This was around 5 years old at the time. It required a new clutch bearing - so it was more economical to replace the clutch at the same time (apparently). The comms 2000 unit needed replacing, as there was a fault where the airbag light came on (I wasn't bothered until the MOT rules changed, and an airbag light meant an MOT failure... what a scam). That cost £300 to replace. Other than that, its had a new exhaust pipe as it was rusting. Oh and the nearside front light seems to go pop after every few months, so I seem to be replacing it quite frequently - a branch hit it in stormy weather.

What's most practical about your car?

Its a great car for a single person or couple. The car is comfortable/powerful enough for me.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

Not much to write home about really. The electric front windows are OK I guess...
