1.4 petrol is zesty when unladen; 1.9 is slow and more van-like, accelerating slowly and struggling in most conditions. Latest 2.0 HDi diesel copes well in all conditions and is the model to go for. It’s a punchy performer and – thanks in part to Partner Combi’s light body – is rather frugal.

Chug-along 1.9D diesel struggles with town work (but 2.0 HDi is much better suited), the petrol 1.4 is more refined and easier to drive; handling is surprisingly entertaining but body roll is inevitable; visibility is good all round. Ride is good at all speeds.
