Equipment

4 out of 5 4.0

All models come with the usual equipment you'd expect at this level including air conditioning (electronic climate control on all models since 2007), leather seats and electric windows. Air suspension with Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control gives the Cayenne a split personality - able to hold its own with sports cars on the road, while giving it more off-road ability than most people will need.

The off-road technology package is aimed at those who regularly venture off the beaten track, but few buyers choose it.

Safety

4 out of 5 4.0

All Cayennes come with front, side and curtain airbags, electronic stability control and traction control, which is fairly typical for an expensive car like this. Cars after the 2007 revisions can be chosen with cornering lights (standard on the Turbo) to provide better illumination in bends and at junctions. A rearward camera for better visibility when reversing is also available as an option and useful on such a big vehicle.

Interior & boot space

4 out of 5 4.0

Unlike several other large 4x4s, the Cayenne isn't available with seven seats. However rear passengers do get plenty of head and legroom, while the sporty seats offer plenty of support and are comfortable on long journeys too. The reasonable 540-litre luggage space expands to a very useful 1,770 litres when the rear seats are folded down. The glove compartment is air conditioned and there are various storage compartments in the cabin.

The Cayenne makes a good tow-car and all the models have a maximum towing capacity of 3,500kg.

How does the boot space compare?

Check the table below to see how the Porsche Cayenne (03-09) compares to other similar cars in terms of available boot space.

Model Boot space
Land Rover Range Rover Sport (05-13) 958 litres
Mercedes-Benz M-Class (05-11) 551 litres
Porsche Cayenne (03-09) 540 litres
BMW X5 (07-13) 530 litres
