Affordable running costs – through cheap road tax and low fuel bills – are key to the Splash’s charm. It’s cheap to buy and run, with decent equipment levels to boot. It should hold its value better than the Fiat Panda, though not as well as its more recognised sister, the Vauxhall Agila.

The Splash is a good choice for low running costs and green motoring. The 1.0-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel both emit 120g/km of CO2 (so are cheap to tax) while the diesel returns an impressive 63mpg – the petrol isn’t far behind, with an average of 57mpg. However the 1.2-litre emits 131/gkm as a manual and 142 g/km as an automatic which is not as good as many similarly-sized alternatives.

Suzuki’s great reputation for reliability appears to be justified once again. The Splash feels durable on the inside and tough enough to cope with daily wear-and-tear plus the interior components are well assembled and finished to a high-quality.
