How much space is there?

There’s a useful amount of room all round actually, more than you would expect given the Aygo’s pint-sized proportions. The interior is also peppered with various cubbies and storage areas, including a decently-sized glove box and door bins.

Sockets for the 12V electrical supply and USB dock are conveniently located and the X-touch infotainment screen is simple to navigate with clear, modern graphics and fast-responding inputs from fingertips.

Leg space is a bit cramped in the rear though. There are just two seat belts back there, which is just as well given how narrow the Aygo is. Some won’t like the fact that the rear windows pop out a little at the back, rather than winding down, but actually, kids love this.

Boot space and storage

If you’re buying an Aygo for its boot then prepare to be disappointed – like all boxy city cars this Toyota prioritises interior passenger space. It’s not class-leading but it is quite a useful size, with 168 litres on offer to store a medium-sized food shop or weekend baggage for two.

Fold the rear seats down if you plan to go away for longer or need to transport anything larger, then you get a much more practical 812 litres of space. All models have a 50:50 split rear seat back to accommodate larger items, but it’s worth noting if you are buying a used Aygo, the older entry-level X version makes do with a single-piece folding bench.

Is it easy to park?

The Aygo is a small car with fine all-round visibility and that, coupled with the standard reversing camera, makes it supremely easy to park. Put it this way – if you have trouble parking a car this size then it might be time to invest in some extra training. Rear parking sensors are optional.

The Toyota Aygo was given four stars by the experts at Euro NCAP in 2014, and it was re-assessed at the end of 2017. With the Toyota Safety Sense package, which is standard-fit, it maintains that four-star score. It’s also packed with six airbags (front, side and curtain), seatbelt pretensioners and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

The back seat is equipped with two Isofix child seat mounting points, while the rear doors have child locks too. Keeping you safe while driving are ABS, emergency braking assist, hill-hold function and electronic vehicle stability control. 

Ensuring you’re visible night or day, LED day running lights are fitted to all models, as are projector beam headlights with an LED band at their lower edge. Large, bold tail lamps are set high up in the rear bodywork to ensure you’re seen clearly despite being in a small car.

Toyota Safety Sense is a laser-controlled system that spots imminent collisions and primes the brakes. It includes autonomous emergency braking and lane-departure warning. That’s a handy suite of safety systems for city driving.
