Isuzu has announced that the AT35 model will rejoin the D-Max pickup truck range in October 2017.

Just in case you’ve forgotten, the AT in AT35 stands for Arctic Trucks, a company famous for building extreme off-road machines – and this Isuzu is easily the most extreme pickup you buy in the UK direct from a manufacturer’s main dealer network.

What’s so special about the Isuzu D-Max AT35?

This new version follows on from the previous Isuzu D-Max AT35, which was introduced in 2016. The original was based on the 163hp 2.5-litre D-Max that has subsequently been replaced by a facelifted model, powered by an all-new 164hp 1.9-litre turbodiesel engine.

Like its predecessor, the 2017 AT35 features a host of modifications that go way beyond the likes of limited edition lifestyle rivals such as the Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian SVP and Nissan Navara Trek-1.

The changes include wide wheelarch extensions covering black alloy wheels with much larger 35-inch off-road tyres. The previous model was also fitted with Fox Racing suspension, raising the suspension 55mm in order to better tackle rough ground.

Isuzu hasn’t said whether things will be the same this time around, but given the price has gone up quite a bit we’d expect that at the very least.

How much is the 2017 Isuzu D-Max AT35 and what do you get for the money?

Prices start at £37,995 (plus VAT) on the road – some £4k more than before, despite the new engine having 40Nm less torque at 360Nm total.

It will still carry over one tonne and tow 3.5 tonnes, though, and it is now available with a new six-speed automatic transmission as well as a six-speed manual, for improved refinement and economy.

Plus you do get more kit – the AT35 is based on the standard Utah model, and the entire D-Max range has had its standard equipment boosted during the facelift. Highlight items include:

Extra features unique to the AT35 include:

  • Tinted windows
  • Tailgate damper
  • Artic Trucks branded headrests, carpet mats and sill covers
  • Special badges on the instruments and door panels

The 2017 Isuzu D-Max AT35 is also only available as a double cab. It comes in a choice of seven colours, and official goes on sale across Isuzu’s 32-strong dealer network on 1 October 2017.
