Cargo Capacity

The second-generation Berlingo is longer and wider than its predecessor resulting in the standard van (L1) load volume of 3.3 cubic metres. The longer L2 model has 3.7 cubic metres of space. The L1 has two payload versions - either 625kg or 850kg - while the L2 can carry 750kg. The width between the wheelarches is 1,229mm, while the load bay length is 1,800mm in the L1 and 2,050mm in the L2. The Berlingo LX is offered with an optional Extenso passenger seat. This is a double passenger seat, although the part next to the driver is only suitable for occasional use by a passenger. This side of the seat offers hidden storage space, while the outer part, when not in use, can collapse to extend the load capacity. With the extended load area the L1 van has a cargo volume of 3.7 cubic metres, while the L2 van increases to an impressive 4.1 cubic metres. Like the original Berlingo, this second generation model is also available as a platform cab van. A nearside side loading door is standard on the LX (optional on the X), and an offside sliding side door is available as an option.

Safety and Security

ABS and a driver's airbag are standard on the Berlingo, as you would expect. Central locking is fitted to the X model, while the LX comes with remote central locking. An alarm is optional on the LX, as is Bluetooth integration ensuring telephone calls can be taken hands-free.

Costs

Citroën has pulled back from the cashback deals it became famous for over the last few years, but the Berlingo is decent value at the asking prices, while the diesel engines are impressively frugal. Service intervals are every 12,500 miles, and the cambelt life has been extended - Citroën claims it shouldn't need replacement for 150,000 miles. There were originally two trim levels - X and LX while a top of the range Enterprise was added in early 2010. This comes very well equipped with Smartnav satellite navigation, remote central locking with deadlocks, air conditioning, Bluetooth and reverse parking sensors.

Reliability

The Berlingo should be reliable for the most part, with major components shared with Peugeot and Citroën products. In the past, Citroën has been guilty of occasional glitches, but it has pledged to work harder on quality and most of these should be ironed out with the Berlingo.
