Land Rover Freelander (08-09) - Review

With a 1670-litre cargo capacity and two-piece bulkhead, the Freelander Commercial is more than capable of carrying heavy loads. Entry-level S models come with a mesh-top, solid-bottom bulkhead, while top trim XS upgrades to a full height solid panel with a small window to the load space. There’s a thick rubber mat, which lines the cargo area to prevent items in transit from slipping around and all models come with four lashing points, to fasten goods properly.

The Freelander is packed with safety gadgets, such as emergency brake assist (EBA) and dynamic stability control (DSC), which adds to the assured feel both on and off-road. The car variant scored a maximum five-stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests and the van should protect passengers just as well in the event of a collision. All models come with privacy glass and blanking panels to shield loads in the cargo area from prying eyes. Front and rear parking sensors are an optional extra worth considering, as rearward visibility can be a bit of a problem – particularly when reversing with a full load.

Like most 4x4s, the Freelander Commercial isn’t particularly fuel friendly and owners shouldn’t expect to squeeze much more than 30mpg out of it in the city. However this will improve considerably on longer motorway journeys.

While the previous generation model was blighted by mechanical niggles, this Freelander Commercial is made of tougher stuff. The 2.2-litre diesel that powers the Land Rover is new to the line-up and should be more reliable, while the interior looks better finished to withstand wear and tear. The most frequently used dials are rubber-coated and muddy foot wells can be easily wiped clean. Unlike some non-approved van conversions, the Freelander Commercial is covered by a three year, unlimited mileage manufacturer’s warranty as it has been converted by official Land Rover specialists. As ever, buyers should check for signs of off-road damage before purchasing.
