Mitsubishi L200 (88-06) - Review

The L200 will carry more than a tonne (up to 1160kg for single cab versions) in its cargo area and is offered with a variety of aftermarket covers. Single cab cargo bed interior length is 2245mm and a width of 1470mm, while the Double Cab offers 1500mm in length. Cargo areas are reinforced, have a central tailgate release and both inner and outer load lashing hooks.

Unfortunately for those who use the 4Work versions, ABS is an option on the L200. As the L200 is not fitted with a great deal of other chassis-based safety systems it is worth taking care in tricky conditions, particularly if you are used to driving a normal car. Security of some the load area covers also leaves a little to be desired with only basic locks. Central locking and engine immobiliser are standard, though, and high-specification models come with both a driver and passenger airbag.

In line with other pick-up trucks and double cabs, the L200 is typical of this class returning about 25mpg when not worked too hard. Warrior and Animal versions are more than £20,000 when you add in VAT for non-business purchasers, which could buy a high specification diesel Nissan X-trail or Honda CR-V which would both use less fuel, but would not be able to perform as well off road or cope with the same workhorse type chores. For company car drivers, the L200 also offers much lower BIK tax than a conventional car for until the rules are changed in 2007. Service intervals were recently increased from 4500 miles to 9000 miles.

These vehicles are designed for a hard-working life and should prove reliable. Interior should also stand up to wear and tear.
