The Interstar offers a choice of three gross vehicle weight (GVW) options - 2800kg in the short wheelbase body, 3300kg or 3500kg in the medium-wheelbase, and 3500kg in the long-wheelbase van. Cargo length (ranging from 2714mm to 3714mm, depending on wheelbase) in this Interstar has risen from 55.5% of the total vehicle length to 63.1%, which makes it exceptionally useful and maximises use of fuel, time and cargo space. Cargo heights range from 1670mm to 2146mm and the sliding side door has a generous opening at 1099mm wide. A second sliding door is optional for extra convenience. Cargo volume ranges from a minimum of 8.0 cubic metres on the low-roof short-wheelbase model to 13.9 cubic metres on the high-roof long-wheelbase, with the 3.5t GVW version offering a maximum payload of 1579kg.

Drivers of E spec Interstar have to do without ABS, although SE models have ABS with emergency braking assistance as well as seatbelt pre-tensioners. A driver's airbag is standard across the range, and all versions have automatic door locking and side-impact protection beams in the doors. Rear parking sensors are standard on SE models and both E and SE have a lockable glovebox, alarm and immobiliser.
Not much to choose on cost between the Interstar and the Renault and Vauxhall equivalents, although the entry-level Interstar 1.9dCi E has less kit and a lower entry price than either a Master or a Movano, if purchasing cost is a major issue. The 1.9 dCi offers servicing at 18,000 miles or two years and 35.5mpg on the combined cycle. The 2.5 dCi (both outputs) has a service interval of 24,000 miles and combined cycle fuel consumption of 31.7mpg, while the 3.0 dCi can go 24,000 miles without an oil change. Glow plugs in the 3.0 dCi will last for 120,000 miles and the timing chain lasts 240,000 miles. Nissan offers a class-leading three-year mechanical warranty on the Interstar, as well as a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty. Nissan also provides three years' RAC roadside assistance.
Using proven mechanicals also used by Renault and Opel/Vauxhall, the Interstar should prove reliable. No major problems have been reported so far.
