Great driver comfort, longer service intervals, more variants
Model designation can confuse
This is the fifth generation of the popular Peugeot Boxer van. In 2006 the van was made more driver and passenger friendly with greater comfort and ergonomics, and there are more variants to suit a greater number of roles. There is the choice of three diesels which are all Euro IV compliant and fitted with an electronic monitor to check exhaust emissions. There is a 2.2 HDi 4-cylinder diesel which comes in two power outputs, 100bhp and 120bhp, and a 3.0-litre diesel with 157bhp. There are three body lengths, three wheelbase lengths and two roof heights, plus four body styles. Security has been improved with independent locks, deadlocks and immobiliser fitted as standard. The Boxer is the sister van to the Citroen Relay and the Fiat Ducato.
The Boxer's cab feels more like a car environment than a van, and there is good space for the driver and two passengers. The steering wheel is reach-adjustable, there are one-touch electric windows and a radio/CD player with steering-wheel mounted controls is fitted as standard. The driver’s seat has a height-adjustable head restraint, reclining seat back, armrest and length-adjustable seat cushion. There are plenty of cubby holes and storage including a 22-litre overhead bin, storage pocket in the door panel and an extractable container under the passengers’ seat.
Unladen the van is extremely willing, particularly with the 120bhp 2.2 HDi. The engine quickly gets the van up to motorway speeds and cruising easily at 70mph – optional cruise control is also available. Without a load the ride is jiggly and the van’s suspension can be a bit bouncy but that should change with the load on board. The six-speed, dash-mounted gear change is ease to use and the adjustable steering wheel can be moved into a comfortable position. Parking is made easier thanks to a tight turning circle and big, two-glass door mirrors. There is also the option of rear parking aids using sensors or a camera located in the third brake light.
