Cargo Capacity

With so many body styles on offer, load volume ranges from eight cubic metres in the low-roof/short wheelbase versions to 17 cubic metres in the high-roof/long wheelbase panel van. However, a new additional length option – named L4 with extra overhang – pushes carrying capacity up to 22 cubic metres, but is only available as a rear-wheel drive option. Payload varies between 2.8 tonnes and 4.5 tonnes. Load length in the short wheelbase models is 2,583mm and up to 4,383mm on the long wheelbase rear-wheel drive versions with extra overhang. To enhance the Master’s carrying capabilities it comes with a full steel bulkhead – a glazed bulkhead can be specified as an option. There's a standard 10mm gauge wood floor but for more heavy duty users a 15mm gauge ply floor is an option. Like most work vans the Master comes with anchorage points to hold down bulky items. As standard, panel vans come with a passenger side load door – a second can be specified - and rear doors that open 180 degrees.

Safety and Security

Renault claims that that the new Master has the shortest stopping distance in its class, with the van coming to a stop from 62mph with a full load on dry surface in 44 metres for front-wheel-drive versions and 46 metres for rear-wheel-drive versions. ABS comes as standard on all models. Stability control is only standard on rear-wheel-drive models and a cost-option on the front-wheel-drive models. All models also get EBD (electronic brake distribution), deadlocks and R.A.I.D (Renault anti intruder device). Safety isn’t as good as some alternatives as only the driver gets an airbag as standard with passengers airbags available as an option.

Costs

Buyers get the benefit of a three-year/100,000-mile warranty as well as three years’ free AA cover which provides piece of mind when covering the kind of high mileage associated with van driving. It’s not the cheapest option available, but also not the most expensive compared to some of the more premium alternatives. Routine maintenance costs have been lowered compared to the previous model thanks to oil change intervals being extended to 25,000 miles or two years, depending which is first, and the use of long-life coolant that pushes change intervals from 74,500 to 100,000 miles.

Reliability

Despite the poor reputation of older Renault models, the manufacturer has worked hard to improve this and work out the problems that plagued previous models such as electrical issues. The peace of mind that comes with the three-year/100,000 mile warranty and added AA cover should offer potential customers confidence.
