Cargo Capacity

Available in gross vehicle weights of 3.0, 3.5 and 5.0-tons and with wheelbases of 3.25, 3.7 and 4.3 metres, plus an optional extra long rear overhang. There are panel van, minibus, pick-up and chassis cab bodystyles, normal, raised and super-high roofs, plus single- and double-cab options. The range accommodates many different configurations, with panel vans for instance offering load volumes of between 7.5 and 17 cubic metres. Where applicable, a right-side sliding door is standard, which on mid- and long-wheelbase versions offers a through loading width of 1.3-metres, accommodating Europallets. VW has also worked alongside a number of coachbuilders and converters ensuring a wide range of custom bodystyles including touring campers and mobile workshops. From 2007, off-the-peg Drop-side, Tipper and Luton conversions have been available, making the cost of such vehicles more transparent, standardising the warranty cover and reducing waiting times.

Safety and Security

The Crafter delivers impressive levels of roadholding and agility for a vehicle of its class thanks to relatively sophisticated suspension. It's also equipped as standard with ABS brakes and an electronic stability program to further enhance its stable on-road manners and reduce the possibility of sliding or skidding in difficult situations. A driver's airbag is fitted as standard, and passenger, side and head airbags are available as options.

Costs

Despite being bigger and heavier than the model it replaces, plus conforming to more stringent (Euro 4) emissions requirements, the Crafter is almost as economical as its thrifty predecessor. Servicing inspections are needed after 50,000 miles, with only an oil change at the 30,000 mile or two-year mark. VW has engineered it be more cost effective to repair with easily removable bumpers and other easily replaceable components. Volkswagen has a network of around 85 dedicated Van Centres in the UK to provide a superior sales and after sales service to the van buyer. This ensures 90 percent of the country is no more than 45 minutes drive from a VW Van Centre.

Reliability

The engine, although newly fitted with common rail injection and particulate traps is tried and tested with proven reliability. Previous LT models were respected for their durability too. The long service intervals make it critical to ensure the oil level is checked periodically although oil level and temperature sensors are fitted.
