Like the earlier version of the Transporter the 2010 model comes with a choice of two wheelbases, three roof heights and four gross vehicle weights (GVW) versions. Most variants are available with a choice of long or short wheelbases. The short wheelbase version has a load length of 2570mm, while the long wheelbase version of 400mm longer at 2970. The load space height in the standard van is 1410, while in the medium roof version it's 1626mm, rising to 1940mm for the high roof version. Load volume ranges from 5.8 cubic metres for the low-roof/short wheelbase van rising to 9.3 cubic metres for the long wheelbase/high roof. Payloads range from 729kg to 1333kg depending on the variant chosen, with GVW ranging from 600kg to 3200kg.There are four tie-down points as standard and more can be specified, plus the rear doors open fully so there is clear access to the rear of the van for easy loading.

As well as anti-lock brakes and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) that featured as standard on the previous model, the Transporter also comes with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Traction Control System (TCS) and hill hold control, which keeps the van stationary on a slope while the driver moves his foot from brake to accelerator to pull away. Other safety features include driver and passenger airbags, automatic hazard warning lights under heavy braking and height-adjustable seat belts and head restraints on the outer seats to ensure the right fit. Remote central locking with deadlocks, electronic immobiliser and breaksafe steering wheel lock comes as standard to provide security. Volkswagen also offers a 'Lane Change Assist' system that alerts the driver if there is a another vehicle in its blind spot as part of visibility pack which also comes with rain-sensing wipers, auto-dim rear view mirror and cruise control. Buyers can also choose from two alarm systems to further enhance security.
The new diesel engines offer better fuel consumption and there is a gear change indicator - both up and downshifts - in the dash to maximise fuel economy. Like the previous model it comes with on-board service indicators so a service could be required from 9,000 miles up to 18,000 mile intervals or 24 months (which ever comes first) depending on use. There is a three-year/100,000 mile warranty, plus a three year Volkswagen Assistance breakdown cover. Getting a deal on a new Transporter is always tough but the upside is that the van retains its values extremely well thanks to a high demand for it on the used market. Volkswagen also offers three different fixed price service packages (service only, service and maintenance, service, maintenance and tyres) through the company's dedicated Van Centres. Volkswagen also offers a range of finance deals such as lease and contract hire schemes.
Volkswagen's commercial vehicles have always enjoyed a strong reputation for reliability. Given that the Transporter is more an evolution of the previous model it is reasonable to expect that reputation to continue. Every new Transporter also comes with three years'/unlimited mileage Breakdown Assistance that provides 24/7 assistance at roadside, home or place of work, onward travel, recovery and also covers many European countries.
