Fuel economy

A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test. Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 21 - 29 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

Depreciation will be painful and all the engines are thirsty – especially the V6 units. Pick one of these and you’ll be a regular at your local petrol station. The 166 is certainly not a car you buy with your head.

The 166 performs badly on the eco front and with an average of 276g/km CO2 across the model line-up, its emissions are high for an executive saloon. It’s worth noting that the line-up does not feature any diesel models, which typically produce less carbon dioxide than petrol engines with similar power outputs. The range is disappointingly thirsty, averaging 24 mpg.

The bad reputation for reliability is largely down to Alfas of old and most owners have nothing but praise for their cars. Any problems tend to be niggles such as minor electric faults or loose trim plus if things do go wrong there’s a large number of good independent Alfa specialists in the UK.
