No Audi is cheap and the A5 Sportback is no different. It shouldn’t cost much to run, however, thanks to strong claimed fuel economy and low tax bills. Official economy for the S5 performance models weighs in at a reasonable 37.7mpg, while the other petrol – the all-wheel drive 252hp 2.0-litre – returns up to 47.9mpg, an impressive figure for such rapid models.
The diesel models, meanwhile, are capable of between 58.9mpg and 68.9mpg, which is equivalent to CO2 emissions of 106g/km to 125g/km – meaning car tax for models registered before April 2017 of £20 to £110. Audi servicing costs aren’t the cheapest, but with infrequent services needed up to 19,000 miles or two years, you shouldn’t end up spending much keeping an A5 Sportback well serviced.
This Audi is expected to retain its value well. This means that if you buy the car with cash or a loan, when you come to sell it should still be worth a substantial amount – cutting the total amount you spend.
Should you run the car on a PCP finance contract, however, high residual values mean that your monthly costs will be lower; potentially this means that you can drive an A5 Sportback for the same price as a model from a less upmarket brand.
Estimated fuel cost per year
|Fuel type||Pence per litre||Estimated cost per year *|
|Unleaded||128p||£1,119 - £1,616 *|
|Diesel||131p||£876 - £1,191 *|
* The estimated fuel cost figure is based on an annual mileage of 10,000 miles and is a guide to how much this model will cost in fuel each year. It's calculated using the model's average MPG (calculated from both town centre and motorway driving) and the average fuel price from around the country. Actual fuel costs will vary based on driving style and road conditions.

How much is it to insure?
Vehicle excise duty (VED) varies according to the CO2 emissions and the fuel type of the vehicle. For cars registered before 01 March 2001 it is based on engine size. For cars registered on or after 01 March 2001 the VED or road tax is based on the car's CO2 emissions.
With claimed emissions from 106g/km to 170g/km for the rapid, all-wheel drive S5 model, the A5 Sportback is quite green for its size. Specify the Quattro all-wheel drive system on 2.0-litre diesel models, however, and economy drops by around 4mpg, with around a 10g/km emissions penalty. The S Tronic gearbox, meanwhile, shaves a few grams off the CO2 figure in most cases.
Highest and lowest CO2 emissions
|Engine||CO2 emissions||Road tax (12 months)|
|2.0 TDi (150ps) Diesel||g/km (Min)||N/A|
|3.0 TSi (354ps) Petrol||174 g/km (Max)||£235 - £465|
The Audi A5 Sportback shares a lot in common with the Audi A4 and therefore we’d expect reliability to be similar. The last generation Audi A4 experienced just two safety recalls – one for brakes and another for airbags.
The engines are seen across the Audi range, meaning that any common issues should have been ironed out by now, while the cabin feels very high quality and built to last.
There is a question mark, however, over the optional Virtual Cockpit digital dashboard and the related electronics, with some Audi TT models with the same system experiencing occasional problems.
