The A8 4,2 is powerful, smooth, refined, comfortable, reasonably economical and with performance best described as 'relentless'. A used purchase, I bought my A8 at 10 years old with 90k miles (barely run in for a v8 diesel auto), For £6k I have a 330hp, 400Nm 4.2 Twin Turbo V8 Auto AWD Aluminium Audi on Air suspension and with the best Bose audio I have ever heard. My cost of ownership (including the £560 road tax p.a.) is still half that of owning a new Corsa. It averages 30mpg (closer to 40 on a run) which is acceptable to me as I don't do more than 4k miles per year in it. The engine is so smooth and quiet it does not sound like a diesel at all. Ok so if something serious goes wrong then it could be expensive so there is risk but the car is bulletproof and after 3 years ownership I will have saved so much vs a new car that I could just walk away and still not be worse off. It is deceptively big, and looks like an A4 just a bit closer as it is proportionally bigger in all dimensions. It does not attract attention and is not ostentatious. Somebody has lost over 60k in depreciation on this car, but it wasn't me, so thanks for an epic bargain! I normally change cars very often but I cannot be parted from my A8. it makes me grin every time I drive it.
