The Audi TT scored four stars when it was tested by Euro NCAP in 2015. Due to the car not coming with autonomous emergency braking as standard (it isn’t even available as an option), it’s not able to achieve a full five-star rating.

That doesn’t mean it’s unsafe, though. Parts of its structure are closely related to the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf, both of which achieved five stars.

A of plethora Audi TT safety systems are still available as options and include:

• Audi side assist (rear-mounted radar sensors to help with lane changes)
• Traffic sign recognition via camera – displays important signs such as speed limits on the instrument panel. It can even recognise temporary speed limits
• Audi pre sense – closes windows and pre-tensions seatbelts if it thinks you’re about to become involved in a collision
• Audi active lane assist – issues a warning or autonomously corrects the steering if the car’s drifting out of its lane

Isofix child seat points are present in the rear, but it’ll be a struggle to get bulky chairs in and out, let alone with room to spare for your children’s legs and feet. 

• Plenty of room for two and luggage
• Two rear seats but they’re tiny
• Surprisingly practical coupe 

Don’t expect miracles inside the TT Coupe – this is no family car despite the fact it (technically) has four seats. While there’s plenty of space up front for even the tallest occupants – surprisingly so – the tiny rear seats are only suitable for small children or for stowing luggage.

Even if you do put kids in the back seats, fitting a child seat could be a struggle due to the low roofline and lack of space for legs in the back. Still, at least there are two Isofix child seat points to securely fit a child seat. 

The TT is a compact car. It sits between five-door Sportback versions of the A1 and A3 in length, but is slightly wider than the latter.

There’s a lot of glass area, so visibility is better than you might expect, although some may struggle with being so low down when it comes to manoeuvring the car in tight spaces. Standard-fit parking sensors help, but we’d pay extra for sensors at the front as well.

Otherwise, it’s a very easy car to judge the size of, while the door mirrors are well-shaped and well-sized. 

To look at, you may not think the TT is a particularly practical, but you might be surprised. The boot measures in at 305 litres which is decent considering the slinky bodywork. It’s not as shallow as you might expect, and access is easy due to a big hatchback tailgate.

Granted, you won’t get any big boxes in there with the rear seats in place, however if you fold them down (which they do easily and flatly), a good amount of extra space is freed up totalling 712 litres. There’s easily enough space for a pair of big suitcases in this form, while with the seats in place three or four soft bags will squeeze in.
