  • Summary

    5 out of 5 5.0

What does this car say about you?

10 years ago it said respectable business man. These days it has a bit of a chav-mobile image but it still gets respect on the road and its still a great car, even if it looks quicker than it actually is.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

Everyone's astonished to hear how little I paid for it, my neighbour said it looks more like a 2 grand car, not a 450 quid car. I certainly feel quite smug next to all the other lads my age in their saxos and corsas. They don't know what they're missing!

Would you buy this car again and why?

Yes, without hessitation, although I think the 525i is probably worth seeking out for its extra poke, as the 520i is a bit gutless of the line. That said as a young driver the insurance is almost reasonable and the economy aint too bad either.

What are you likely to buy next?

Should never have sold it really. Probably a newer 5. Tempted by an Alfa 166 but not sure if I'll live to regret it.

  • Buying experience

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Independent

Did you buy this car new?

    No

    What price did you pay?

    £450

When did you buy the car?

    February 2008

Did you get a good deal and why?

At 450 quid this is the best buy, and probably the best allround car I have owned. Nothing went wrong and its wearing its miles superbly.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

One of BMWs best all rounders at a knock down price. Absolute steal!

    What was the dealer like?

He had this car as a trade in but was using it personally for a while so knew it was mechanically sound. The bodywork was reasonable but the front seats were tatty so the price was low.

  • Driving it

    5 out of 5 5.0

    What's it like to drive?

Great. BMW got the handling and steering spot on with this one. Firm and responsive with loads of grip and good stability even in the wet (far better than 3 Series in this respect). Ride is on the firm side (I think mine had M-tec suspesion though) but not harsh and corners like a dream. Gearbox is slick and cruch free, even at 180K, though clutch starting to wear.

    What's it like to park?

Power steering, tight turning circle, light clutch and gears and the rear spoiler marks out the back end for you. Pretty damn good for a big car.

  • Living with it

    4 out of 5 4.0

Have you had any problems with the car?

Nope. Not a thing. At 180000 miles it really shouldn't be this good, but it runs smoother and drives tighter than most cars with a quarter of that milage on the clock. Uses a bit of oil and the coolant needs watching now an then, but noting out of the ordinary.

What's most practical about your car?

errr...spacious boot? touring is practical, but saloon not very.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

Old car so pretty basic spec by todays standards. So probably the electric windows and the leather 3 spoke steering wheel.
