Other BMW 5-Series (2003 - 2010) models:

  • Summary

    4 out of 5 4.0

What does this car say about you?

Somewhere between practical dog owning family man and shouty outside lane headlight flashing middle manager in a hurry. And badge snob.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

Badge snob, show off, car lover.

Would you buy this car again and why?

Yes, well the newer version. Once the niggles were worked out it has been great. It drives better than most cars, looks good and is hugely practical.

What are you likely to buy next?

BMW 5 series (F11), 3 series Touring X Drive or (if they ever build the bloody thing) Alfa 159 replacement.

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Independent

Did you buy this car new?

    No

    What price did you pay?

    £10,500

When did you buy the car?

    April 2012

Did you get a good deal and why?

It was a good price, and the typical drivers seat split was fixed as part of the deal.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

I wanted a large estate car for work and family, and the BMW Efficient Dynamics made it appear the best value car to run. I also wanted the BMW driving experience.

    What was the dealer like?

Friendly and helpful until the turbo went.

  • Driving it

    5 out of 5 5.0

    What's it like to drive?

Brilliant. The handling feels far lighter than a car this size should, it has a real sense of connection with the road and can be thrown through bends with huge confidence. For a basic diesel the performance is surprising, especially the top end acceleration.

    What's it like to park?

It is large for many spaces, overhanging the ends in many car parks but its very manouverable with a tight steering lock so its easy to squeeze it in if theres room.

  • Living with it

    5 out of 5 5.0

Have you had any problems with the car?

Turbo failure at 80,000 miles, destroying the engine; central locking receiver broke in heavy rain (newer BMW part is waterproof); wiring loom to tail gate failed; handbrake shoes fur up if the brake isnt pulled on at low speed to clean them.

What's most practical about your car?

Split tail gate is brilliant - great to get a lead on a dog in busy places or to pile tons of loose stuff in. The boot is incredible. Ive carried house doors layed flat, a car engine & gearbox, anything fits.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

Visual parking sensors. Mine is quite basic.
