• Summary

What does this car say about you?

This is an expensive car to buy, to maintain and to run. It says I am prepared to pay that premium for the luxury of a good quality 4x4.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

My next door neighbour has one exactly the same. I think he has good taste. My kids think I am spending their inheritance!

Would you buy this car again and why?

Probably not. I have had a different car every 2-3 years for the last 40 years. I suspect I will similarly tire of this one in due course.

What are you likely to buy next?

    Range Rover Vogue.

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Didn't buy from a dealer

Did you buy this car new?

    No

    What price did you pay?

    £0

When did you buy the car?

    February 2012

Did you get a good deal and why?

Yes. Car well below market valuation but it has seen some action at 77k.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

Needed an affordable 4x4. Narrowed it down to Freelander, XC90 or X5. Looked at many. Found this one locally, private sale.

    What was the dealer like?

Private seller speak with forked tongue, same as everybody who sells a car. Found a few issues after buying it but no more than I expected. Nobody sells a car without good reason.

  • Driving it

    5 out of 5 5.0

    What's it like to drive?

Very good. Lots of power in reserve. A cosseted, all leather, well equipped driving environment. It smooths out (most) road imperfections - although it is the Sport, so slightly harder ride than some.

    What's it like to park?

No problem. Parking is something you learn to do to pass your test. If you cannot park, give back your license and re-take your test. Anyway this car has sensors back and front. Anybody could park it, despite the size.

  • Living with it

    4 out of 5 4.0

Have you had any problems with the car?

Had a major diagnosis done by my local independent BMW man. Needed CV joint boot (not unusual in X5s) and complete new rear brake/handbrake.

What's most practical about your car?

It is big, comfortable, fast (when asked), quiet (for a diesel) and nicely finished inside. In the main other drivers defer to an X5 because it looks aggressive. Plenty of acceleration to get you out of trouble if needed,.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

This one has the upmarket entertainment package with TV, SATNAV, etc, etc. Like the huge sunroof. Seat adjustment/memory is first class.
