This futuristic looking hatch is Volkswagen’s EV answer to the Golf, attempting to combine all the latest tech into a package that should be easy to use every day. The interior can be tricky to master at first, but the ID.3 is incredibly straightforward to drive and live with, without asking you to change much of your daily routine. It’s comfortable with plenty of cabin space, refined, and handles quite well.

If you want an EV that looks and feels futuristic, but won’t leave you feeling alienated, the ID.3 manages this extremely well. There are plenty of trim levels and power outputs to choose from and you can be as subtle or as bold as you like with the styling. All models claim to achieve over 200 miles per full charge, with the longer-range Tour if you need to travel further, offering 330+ miles from its larger battery.

Best medium electric car - MG 5 EV SW

If you’re looking for maximum practicality on a budget, you won’t have to look far beyond the MG 5 EV. Not only is this MG cheaper to buy over some smaller electric cars, but this is the only fully electric estate on sale below £80,000.

There’s a claimed 250-mile range on a full charge, and when you factor in generous passenger space for four with a high level of standard kit, the MG 5 EV is a strong value-for-money contender. It drives better than you’d might expect, too, with sprightly performance and tidy handling.

The Kia e-Niro continues to offer a brilliant combination of range, practicality, and everyday usability, proving that an electric car for families needn’t cost a fortune to buy with cash. For many, the e-Niro should be all the car they need, with plenty of cabin space, generous equipment and a well-built interior.

Even the entry-level 39kWh model claims to cover 180 miles, and with a battery range indicator that’s proven to be more accurate than many rivals, this shouldn’t be as compromising to own if you plan to switch from an internal combustion car.
