Fuel economy

A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test. Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 34 - 39 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

The up front servicing deal helps to keep maintenance costs reasonable. If buying used, check whether the car has any free or pre-paid servicing left on it. Insurance, fuel and repair costs are nothing to be scared of either but the biggest cost will be the dreaded depreciation.

The Lacetti is not particularly efficient and even the greenest engine in the line-up – the 1.4-litre – emits a hefty 165g/km of CO2 and can only manage 39mpg.

The mechanicals are fairly robust and shouldn’t give much cause for concern as long as the servicing schedule has been adhered to. There aren’t much in the way of sophisticated electronics, which means few worries on electrical glitches too.
