It has a claimed combined economy of 80.7mpg – a heady number indeed – but in real-world conditions that figure will probably be more like 70mpg. Fiat is competitive when it comes to servicing against rivals. The brand is at the cheaper end of the spectrum when considering servicing costs.

The greenest engine on the Fiat Punto range is the 83bhp 1.3-litre Multijet diesel. It emits an excellent 90g/km of CO2. If you prefer a petrol variant, then the best choice is the 83bhp TwinAir three-cylinder engine. It emits 98g/km of CO2.

Fiat is building its reputation on reliability. As regards Fiat Punto reliability in particular, the engines, including the TwinAir petrol, are well proven. There is still a question mark over some of the interior plastics but on the whole this Punto looks and feels fairly well built.
