Six airbags are fitted as standard in the FX, as well as active front head restraints (which help reduce the likelihood of whiplash injuries), a tyre pressure monitoring system and electronic stability control. Intelligent Cruise Control, which can activate the brakes to maintain a set distance with the vehicle in front, is available as an option. This system also features Intelligent Brake Assist which will begin to apply the brakes if sensors detect a crash is likely.

It’s no surprise then, that it was awarded the maximum five star rating for crash safety by Euro NCAP, so you could regard Infiniti FX safety levels as imperious. This was under the more strict regulations introduced in 2009 that takes into account whiplash protection along with preventative safety systems such as stability control. There’s also lane departure which brakes the car if you start straying into another carriageway.

Infiniti’s FX is capable of carrying five people plus luggage, although with a minimum luggage capacity of 410 litres, it is some way down on its main rivals. However, one of its features is particularly useful. Instead of mere parking sensors or a reversing camera, the FX50S has cameras at the sides and front of the car which provide an overhead 360 degree view to ensure safe parking manoeuvres.

All FX models also come with Scratch Shield paint, which can repair light scratches.
