Given this is a large car to start with, Jaguar XJR safety levels should prove impressive. There isn’t a EuroNCAP score because the company doesn’t tend to test the more expensive, high-end models.

The XJR should, however, perform well given it has twin front, side and curtain airbags, comes with stability control featuring three settings to allow the driver more or less control over the car’s handling, and even pedestrians benefit from the Jaguar’s safety systems with a pop-up bonnet designed to lessen any impact.

To aid safe, controlled parking there are sensors front and rear plus a rear facing camera to help see what is behind when reversing. There is also the option of a blind spot monitoring system which helps warn the driver if there is a car alongside that can’t be easily seen in the driver’s mirrors.

Given this is a ‘super’ (read large) saloon you would think that Jaguar XJR practicality would score highly but this isn’t the case. The boot is surprisingly small given the size of the car and not particularly deep.

There are saloons with bigger boots – Audi’s A6 pitches in with a rear luggage space of 530 litres, which beats the XJR’s 520 even though it has a longer wheelbase by a significant 300mm. Still there’s room for a couple of large suitcases and weekend bags.

Inside there are the usual stowage areas of glovebox, door pockets and cubby hole under the armrest in the central console. Rear seat passengers can pull down the arm rest for cupholders and storage.
