As far as fuel consumption goes, lowest Jeep Cherokee running costs belong to the lower powered 138bhp 2.0-litre diesel which averages a claimed 53.3mpg in front-wheel-drive form. Four-wheel-drive models with the same engine are rated at 50.4mpg.

Four-wheel drive Cherokees fitted with the more powerful 168bhp version of the same engine return a 48.7mpg average.

Predictably, the picture is less rosy for the 3.2-litre petrol Trailhawk which manages an alarming 28.2mpg claimed average.

Lowest Jeep Cherokee emissions in terms of CO2 belong to the 138bhp diesel, which emits 139g/km of CO2 in two-wheel-drive form. That just might be enough to attract the attentions of company car buyers looking for something different.

Powering an extra pair of wheels increases those emissions to 147g/km in four-wheel-drive models.

The 168bhp 4×4 Cherokee diesel manages 154g/km and the 3.2-litre petrol 232g/km.

It’s too early to make any cast-iron predictions about Jeep Cherokee reliability, although the diesel engines are established units from the Fiat family and generally Jeep reliability is fine.
