What are the running costs?

This is pretty easy to answer. There are three petrol engines on offer – one conventional turbo, one full hybrid and one plug-in hybrid – and the running costs decrease with each increasing level of hybrid assistance.

So, the conventional petrol is cheaper to buy, but it’s less frugal and is only available with front-wheel drive and has a manual gearbox. It has more torque than the e-Hybrid, but also has higher emissions and lower economy.

The e-Hybrid model strikes a balance between the two extremes, offering official economy figures of between 46.3 and 49.6mpg. Its CO2 emissions are also much lower than the regular petrol’s 157g/km number, standing between 128 and 136g/km depending on the specification.

The plug-in hybrid is the most economical – but only if you remember to keep the battery pack topped up. If you regularly make use of the electric range in the PHEV and you charge it often, you should see triple figures. If not then expect between 35 and 50mpg, compared to high-30s to low-40s with the 1.3-litre petrol.

The 4xe’s CO2 emissions are between 40-44g/km – and of course, 0g/km when running on battery power. On our testing we found Jeep’s claimed 30-mile range a bit optimistic. However 20-25 miles should be achievable.

Servicing and warranty

The Compass comes with a five-year/75,000 mile warranty as standard. There’s also something called Jeep Wave available.

This comes with three years of free servicing. In the future there will be additional benefits such as Jeep-related owners events and promotional offers.

Reliability

  • Subject to three recalls
  • Broadly reliable
  • Tech used in other Jeep products

This latest Compass is being built in Italy, rather than India – and it’s probably a little too early to tell on the long-term reliability. But the early models were subject to three recalls.

Its engines are found elsewhere in Jeep’s range (the PHEV system, for example, is lifted from the Renegade 4xe) so they are at least tried and tested.
