The Land Rover Discovery running costs are not going to be cheap, but in 2.0-litre form and driven reasonably gently, it has the potential to be reach between 30.0 and 33.6mpg on the WLTP results. In the real world, Parkers was able to match this figure, although in a week of driving, averaged 28.2mpg.
The 2.0-litre diesels offer the lowest running costs - but the V6 versions aren't too shabby either, considering the additional performance on offer. There were no hybrids announced at launch, but expect those to surface by 2020 – although there's no official word on this from Land Rover yet.

How much is it to insure?
Vehicle excise duty (VED) varies according to the CO2 emissions and the fuel type of the vehicle. For cars registered before 01 March 2001 it is based on engine size. For cars registered on or after 01 March 2001 the VED or road tax is based on the car's CO2 emissions.
If you want petrol, the choice is the 222g/km 2.0-litre 300hp Si4 version. The lack of a hybrid or plug-in hybrid currently counts against it in terms of green credentials – expect that to join the range in 2020. If you want a Land Rover plug-in, you're going to have to stump up for a Range Rover or Range Rover Sport.
There are three diesel engine options available, encompassing the Sd4 240hp low-emission 2.0-litre producing 201g/km of CO2 and averaging 37mpg combined on the WLTP testing programme. The higher-power 3.0-litre V6 is available in Td6 (257hp, 189g/km, 39mpg combined) and Sd6 (306hp, 206g/km, 39mpg combined) and both are Euro emissions standard EU6.

This is a large, sophisticated 4x4 and the fifth-generation Land Rover Discovery reliability doesn't have a stellar reputation because of high warranty costs. Land Rover's build quality has improved immeasurably in recent years, and the company continues to work hard in this respect – but expect it to lag behind the best Japanese opposition, and be on a par with the Germans.
The company does rank well in customer satisfaction surveys and generally Land Rover’s cars are seen as being robust - particularly engines and the 4x4 systems. Good customer service by dealers on the whole also engenders confidence and ensuring the car is regularly serviced will also boost reliability.
