Up front, the NX has about as much room as anyone in the market for a medium-size SUV could want.

A few nice touches too. A wireless phone charger, good size cupholders, and the central armrest is massive and soft, meaning both driver and passenger can comfortably place their elbows on it.

Those in the rear seats have little to complain about, with good levels of head and knee room. Three people will slide into the back for a short journey with no issues, but there is a pronounced transmission tunnel running down the centre, so central occupants have greatly reduced legroom.

Boot space and storage 

The NX has a 545-litre boot with the seats up, increasing to 1,436 with them folded down.

This means the boot is just a little smaller than the competition but it’s in no way cramped. There’s still enough room for three golf bags.

Interestingly, there’s no size difference between the hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. Plus because of the variable boot height boards, there is underfloor storage for charging cables.

Is it easy to park?

The view out of the rear isn’t brilliant, but the Lexus NX is easy enough to park because of the strength of its technology.

All models come with parking sensors but you’ll need to upgrade to get a camera. It is at least crystal clear and easy to see on the huge infotainment system.

Safety

• Five-star Euro NCAP rating
• Excellent Safety Assist result, due to generous tech
  

The Lexus NX scored five stars in Euro NCAP testing. Though the testing body remarked that technical information—usually provided—had been omitted from this submission, this didn’t hurt the Lexus NX’s results. Performing strongly in crash protection for adults, children and pedestrians, the NX 350h was particularly impressive for its integrated safety technology.

Significant front and lateral crash protection for drivers and passengers and a side head airbag in the rear speak to the attention-to-detail Lexus has adopted regarding safety standards in the NX.

As standard it gets a pre-collision autonomous braking system, dynamic radar cruise control, lane keep assist and adaptive high beam.

The most interesting safety system on the NX is the E-Latch system (pictured below), which isn’t standard. This electronically controls the opening of the doors. It works alongside a blind spot monitoring system that can prevent you from opening the door into oncoming traffic.
