In their own words

I've owned my 111s for 10 years, and in that time I've driven ~120,000 miles using it as a daily driver. It's my second Elise, as when I had to replace the first (a '97 standard Elise) I realised I wasn't finished with Lotus ownership and so bought another. The 111s has a close ratio gearbox and comfier seats than the standard model, everything else was (I think) pretty much the same. Getting in and out requires practice, the boot is small, the windscreen mists up (in bad weather), and the roof leaks (if you don't waterproof it regularly). "Impractical" is an apt description. I've had to deal with one cam-belt failure (after purchasing the car!), and numerous 'little' problems (like the brake light switch failing every 4-6 months, or a fuel pump fuse blowing). The engine issues can be largely attributed to being a Rover K-Series engine, which doesn't have the best reputation for reliability. Also suspension parts and catalytic converters can be considered 'consumable items'. I've 'broken down' three times that I can remember in these 10 years (cambelt, 1st fuel pump fuse, and a ball-joint failure) ! It's spent more time in the garage being fixed than I care to think about (non lotus garage) waiting for spare parts.... and despite all that, when its all working - its worth it. So many times over. It's a fantastic "drivers car", its levels of feedback and accuracy spoil you. So much so that every other car you drive will feel like a bus in comparison. Oh, and when the sun comes out and you've spent 5 minutes taking the roof off - its twice as good! (and you don't want to put the roof back on until its raining!) Drive one if you can, buy one if you want, love it or hate it - its a unique experience. :) I both love & hate mine, its really no fun when commuting, but get it on the back roads and enjoy the twisty bits - its a fun toy, and should be enjoyed as such whenever you can.
