The Exige isn’t as expensive to run as you may imagine. A steady demand and limited production keeps values high, so depreciation is slow. It also uses a light and modern Toyota engine, which means it’s surprisingly fuel efficient. Average fuel consumption is 31mpg. Insurance is arguably the biggest burden as it falls into the highest rating – group 20.

Repairing the body is a highly specialised – and expensive – job.

Considering the performance and pace the Exige offers, emissions are pretty reasonable at 216g/km of CO2. Fuel economy is acceptable too at 31mpg.

The Exige was recalled in 2005 (along with Elise) as it was found that the gearlever could break if subjected to heavy use. But aside from that Lotus does a pretty good job of screwing its cars together – all are hand built at its factory in Norfolk.
